I'm not sure how much your data use would cost but you might find it cheaper to try and pick up a car radio with shortwave, or maybe a shortwave converter and listen on your existing car radio, such as one of these http://www.angelfire.com/ia/lfb/

I don't know how well a portable radio would work - the feedback I've seen is that there's too much interference to make it worthwhile. I understand Pioneer and Sony both had shortwave car radios in their ranges until fairly recently - you might be able to pick one up NOS. The shortwave converters receive on SW and rebroadcast on AM for your car radio to pick up.

I just tried the radio with a long wire aerial...the big problem is with fading and fazing, interference was low.

I use an app called tunein to listen to the beeb when on the move. It doesn't use too much data but I couldn't tell you how much.

I don't think there would be any advantage in using a 3rd party app for this particular application. Data steaming is data streaming and the "front end" you use to get it shouldn't make any difference to how much data is used. Short wave on the move is most unlikely to be satisfactory for a number of reasons.

How about setting your home computer to record the world service broadcasts, then each day, copy it onto a memory stick or card, and play that in the van. OK, it will be a day old, but that's not the end of the world. Just a thought. I often download radio comedy at home, copy it to my phone and blue tooth it to my van stereo, for use when the R4 "Afternoon Play" is on  (etc)
Got a new van, but it's a 165bhp T4 [shock horror] Accurate LPG Station map here

You have to use an app, you can't stream directly from the beeb on android.

Thanks again,i've got a lot of reading and checking to do!
The bbc says that if I install iplayer in the UK I can use it abroad! at the mo' I'm using a nokia n8 [Symbian] ipad, android, and short wave.
I have to check if my car radio uses 10k station spacing before buying an Amercian short wave converter.

Yes you can use it abroad because you'll have a UK number.

or rip the interior out and go for broke. Admittedly you'd have to jump in the front now and again (brick on throttle pedal) to make sure you're steering right but should be OK on long straight runs.
