As per what Ralf says ^^^ = yes it will make a big difference, if it's not working, but...

I tried sucking on the vacuum advance pipe to the vacuum advance unit and could not achieve or maintain suction/vacuum. There didn't seem to be any movement of the rotor arm

It's not the rotor arm that moves, it's the base plate below it that moves (altering the timing as it does so).

remove rotor arm and protective cover then you can see movement on the plate/hall sender below.

One other thing to add is that some people just can't suck hard enough, I wouldn't have believed it until I watched what2d's pathetic attempt at testing a dizzy

Ta John and Itchyfeet. I'll have another look but nowt wrong wi' my suck. When I tried it at the side of the road there wasn't any sense of a vacuum. I'll get Lindsay to have a go.

I tested my old one with a vacuum cleaner - it didn't move. The new one certainly did. Use the crevice attachment on the hoover, stivk the vacuum advance unit pipe into the crevice attachment - the base plate will move easily. You may have to make a seal on the open end of the crevice attachment.
Tbh I'm surprised the vacuum unit has made that much difference to your performance - since replacing my vacuum unit iv only noticed a marginal difference when climbing hills but a significant difference when pulling off from bring stationary.

Bit of an update; the vacuum unit was not working so I replaced it. Better but still not brill. I noticed the fuel pipe from the pump to carb looked dodgy so took it off and it was letting air in all over the place. Replaced and all running well now. The thing is the fuel pipe is only about a year old. Hey Ho!
