It's a diesel.
I too have my starter repaired.
And It was about the same £55
AGG 2.0L 8V. (Golf GTi MkIII)

'89 2.1 with Pierburg-esq carb.
ABN/ABM 5sp gearbox. ( I forget which, and now it is under a protective layer! )
