1.6 TD JX T.BELT change and timing PART NUMBERS NEEDED

Post by epowell »

Hi Everyone

I am pretty much new to DIY T3'ing, I am a Canadian living in the Czech Republic...
...I just recently bought a wonderful old high-top T3 in Czech, and very soon need to:
- REPLACE TIMING BELT & TENSIONER
- ADJUST DIESEL INJECTION PUMP TIMING

So far I have theoretically figured out 'how to' do the job but I am currently struggling to identity, locate, and source all the parts and specialty tools I will need for this job --- HOPEFULLY I can find sources in Europe (Czech Rep. is even better).

But firstly I need to find out what the PART NUMBERS are for these parts and tools... THEN look for sources.

As far as I know, these are the parts and tools I will definitely NEED (VW 1.6 TD JX ENGINE):
1. TIMING BELT
2. TIMING BELT TENSIONER
3. VALVE COVER GASKET
4. DIAL INDICATOR
5. DIAL INDICATOR ADAPTOR

If anyone can tell me the part numbers (and possible source) for these items, I would be MUCH in appreciation!!

Thanks
Edward

Brickwerks sell all those bits. You can get part numbers from Vagcat or ask BW.

I had a look and couldn't see jx belt and tensioner - maybe out of stock at present.

Brilliant site!

To pull off this job I will also obviously need a valve cover gasket --- on Brickwerks I looked up and found this: https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/ ... -1-7d.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It seems they do not sell only the valve cover gasket separately..... ?

It is because it isn't a valve cover - it's a rocker cover! :lol:

hehe :D thanks santa :D :D

I NOTICED :) ...you Brits have cute different names for everything :D ...the timing belt is now called a CAMBELT :D

Cool, thanks so much - I will check this out!

And by the way, what is a WATER PUMP called in the UK? The previous owner also said I should replace that, and I can't seem to find that on BrickW . . . :cry:

Cool!
Aha... but that is tricky because for some reason I think my engine doesn't have a number... I searched and searched and searched - and took sandpaper to the part of the block where the number is supposed to be stamped, but nothing is there... also the little paper tag under the fuse box is too faded to read.

Someone said that when an engine is made as an EXTRA rather than for a specific vehicle, they do not stamp a number on it....??? Not sure if this is true. . . however there are other indicators which clearly show that my engine, while surely a JX, is not the original --- one such indicator is that there is a secondary oil pressure sensor on the engine with nothing attacked to it --- my dash only can support ONE oil sensor, so obviously my engine is not original.... so I'm not sure how to identify it :cry:

Check the size of your hole - Easiest way to tell.. "early" pumps have a pulley with approx a 40mm hole in the centre, "late" are approx 30mm.

Aha, very very cool!
I am now in Vancouver and my van is in Czech. . . so I can't look right now.
I know that I MUST IMMEDIATELY change the CAMBELT, but the previous owner advised to also change the waterpump --- do you know if changing the waterpump is a pretty straight-forward job that I could do sometime AFTER changing the cambelt, or should these jobs be done at the same time... and if for some reason the waterpump fails on me, what is the worst that can happen, overheating the engine??

Pretty straight-forward, alternator off first. Be prepared to change the plastic thermostat housing that is bolted on to the pump they quite often warp and will not seal correctly if re-used. Mine was egg shaped after removal and there was no way that it would ever seal again. The heat seems to build up a distortion in it that becomes apparent once the tension of the bolts is released.

OK, so then perhaps I will do this sometime after I do the cambelt change......
Thanks

BW is Brickwerks. You don't need to post an enquiry on Vagcat just look at the Parts Catalogue they have online there - timing belt is here:

Hello Ed!

I think the cheapest solution would be to source the parts locally.
The guys who manage the prague bus club are running a webshop. They sell good quality parts.

http://www.vwbusshop.cz/tesneni/tesneni ... 1-6td.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vwbusshop.cz/diesel/napinaci-kladka-ina.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.vwbusshop.cz/diesel/rozvodov ... -zubu.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

:ok
