run pause stop start run pause stop ........

Post by edoh »

van running fine EXCEPT for - cutting out whenever stationary - coming up to lights - stopping at roundabout etc starts up first time - and as long as foot on accelerator - drives fine again until its next time to stop.... any ideas where to look or what to check? I'm guessing fuel related - somehow not being able to draw enough fuel when stopped? Standard fuel pump with correct rod length / fuel lines good / running a  weber dat carb with a manual choke
runs fine (if expensive) on full choke / no stalling -
all suggestions welcome

It'll either be the most expensive on kev's list or the last one you replace!!
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

As Kev says. If you think about it, theres a logic to it. As soon as foot goes off, the extra air (now coming from somewhere it shouldn't be) weakens the mixture drastically and its just insufficient to let the engine idle so it dies out. Idle needs a very specific ratio of fuel/air and to achieve that, all hoses around carb need to be secure and gaskets airtight. One leak and its bleuuuuu.... :D

Above idle, its not generally such an issue.

I had a simple problem that caused this symptom. An earth from the side of the carb became disconnected. I found it hanging loose, bolted it back on and the problem was solved.

Had similar symptoms prior to getting a carb refurb to get rid of air leaks (esp from wear around throttle spindle). That was on solex carbs though. Hopefully just a dodgy vaccuum line connection or something equally simple/cheap!

5 thank yous
it was indeed the little hose leaving the side of the distributor - going to the carb - and - in fact - the hose leaving the back of the carb going up to the air cleaner box - both worn/perished and slipping off -
easy fix replacing hoses - now held in place with small clips -
thanks so much for your contributions peeps -
van on steady idle again - and no cutting out :ok
