yeah I have one like that. There's no way you'd become numb with mine, unless your stone deaf. It's so bloody annoying i've become trained to switch off the lights before I switch off ignition!

As the sidelights come on regardless of whether headlights are on or not, you could always use one of the unused LED mounts in the centre of the dash say add a yellow LED and a 290 ohm resistor, connected into the sidelight circuit. In a way this is the beauty of hardwiring dashes but you can do the same even with a membrane fitted. 290 ohm is only a rough guide. You may need to increase the value if you find the light too bright. I'm sure a dash light would be good enough to remind you and it won't go out unless lights are off.
Frankly, VW should have fitted one. There are one or two things VW didn't quite get right on the dash but it was the 80s after all.
