T25 DIRECT/East Dulwich Campers: Engine Replacement??

Post by ems »

Hello there,
Please forgive me if this is not in the right forum section but as it covered a couple of topics I was not sure.
I am pretty sure my 1.6 D head has cracked or at least warped in my 1986 camper. I am losing water and the whole system is very pressurised getting boiling hot within 5 mins. Really don't think its a simple thermostat/or switch issue any more.
If I am looking at a new engine I want to do it properly and take the opportunity to put a 1.9 engine in and have asked a couple of garages for help and prices.
I have rang CamperShack and Andrew was very helpful, but I would need to find my own replacement engine and he offers no warranty at all.
The Shack is also a long way from where I live in Essex so in an effort to find a company a bit closer I found a company called T25 Direct or East Dulwich Campers which is only a hour or so away. Apparently these are the same place.
They offer this:
http://www.t25direct.com/19-1y-diesel-e ... -298-p.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is there any one out there who has used T25 Direct for this service? Any experiences with this garage?
It says that they strip the replacement engine down and recondition it on the website but when I discussed this it turned out that the £2,200 was just for the engine and ancillary parts not actually stripping the engine down in anyway and re -conditioning it. But they still warranty it for a year?

Before I fork out any hard earned cash on this I would really appreciate any opinions or reviews of this place?

Thank you all x

According to the description on that web page it is an exchange - they take your old engine and ancillaries and swap it for one that they have already reconditioned. If that's not the case they need to change the description!

It's a bit naughty to state that they recondition it for that price on their website then you find out that they don't! If that is the way that they drum up business they seem very shady to me. I paid £200 (I think) for a 1Y engine and did it myself - What they want for supply and fit seems way over the top if it isn't reconditioned to me.
I've got a head here that you can have for nowt if you are up this way - Felixstowe. You can see the normal cracks (nothing to worry about) and there is slight encroachment of a waterway towards the cylinder. I think that it is a JX head so need to check the oilways match yours. (My old engine went from JX to CS to JX block as a CS (ie without turbo) so don't know for sure what it ended up with!

Maybe ask Simon at t3volution? I'm sure he even has a 1Y engine with known history, unless he's sold it already.
He's called toomanytoys on here.

Nearly all the companies that rebuild here seem to be unreliable, which is why campershack understandably won't offer a warranty on the ones available. I had a rebuild for my old T2 years ago from a company that no longer trades. It didn't fail completely but after a year, some of the valves has to be replaced. Is there any company in the UK that can rebuild reliable engines for our vans?

I must admit that swapping to a 1Y was the best thing that I did.

silverbullet is offering a service now i think for petrol wax's. Im sure it won't be cheap, but you could pretty much guarantee it will be perfect
For diesels the options are much wider as its a normal engine

There are many scrap yards that will let you hear an engine running and sometimes even let you drive the car it is in, unfortunately the cars you need are getting a bit old now!! I would go down this route and then get a local garage to fit it. The older version of the 1.9 turbo has an old fashioned injection pump and fits straight in. I believe depending on the engine used you may need to use a different manifold. You may also need to have a nice stainless exhaust made up!! I ordered a 1.9 XUD turbo from a peugeot for my LDV pilot camper and it was in good condition as promised by the scrap yard. 80,000 miles.

Hi All,
Firstly I apologise for the delay since the last chat on this subject but for those interested I just thought I would update on the continued story.
My 1.6d 1986 Camper is now with East Dulwich Campers or T25 Direct - They seem to go by both names.

I have spoken to Oliver and Miles there at length about the van, and through ebay bought a 1.9 Caddy. Which turned out to have the wrong engine type... Wanted a 1Y ended up with a AEY!
They insist that it will still work although due to newer electrical components the swap won't be as simple... or as cheap but they are going to use it as a trial run on this engine type. eep!

I know when I was first looking into directly swapping or reconditioning an engine, that finding first hand experiences and recommendations of engine swaps (that weren't done directly by their clever owners) were hard to find. So I hope to update as to how this conversion goes for anyone who is interested in a VW garage in the South East that can do this!

I just want the van to work now having already lost the summer, so fingers crossed for 2016.

The AEY is just the SDI engine, same block as the 1Y/AEF, they should just be able to use your existing pump and electrics.
I know the AEF has loads of electrical bits, I just tore it all out and it left me with 4 wires to wire in. If they are any good they will soon work it out :)
