Alternative turbo's for AFN?

Post by davegsm82 »

Has anyone shoehorned a different turbo into their AFN TDi upgrade?

Sadly, my turbo oil feed pipe snapped the other day and starved the turbo of oil but probably only for 5 minutes, mainly at idle, but this has been enough to kill it.

I'd like to 'future proof' the engine in case I go for more power at some point, so would like to bolt on a larger turbo.

Does anyone know of anything larger which fits near enough the same stud pattern as the original AFN turbo? I'm using the JX Manifold, AFN turbo and the adapters from Ultimate engineering.

The pd130 turbo from passat/a4 is meant to be a bolt on job.

Thanks Lloydy, that looks like a valid option.

Daztwigg, what manifold are you using with that turbo? Mine's on the original JX Manifold so its further forwards, I guess you're using a standard centre mounted position and home made engine mount brackets? What's the turbo lag like on a VNT20? I figure it won't be too bad as unlike a car it's going to be on boost more often than not due to the extra weight and wind resistance.

Dave.

Hi dave I am using a early passat 1.6 td top mount manifold with adapter plate and stock jx engine mounts, no lag just boost on tap. Image

Looks like you'll be able to drain to the block rather than the sump with that set up?

Did look into this lloydy when I set it up but when engine is kicked over at 50deg the final bit of return into block would go uphill, so not ideal

Daz, did you have to mod the turbo at all or does sit at more or less the same angle as on the V6 TDI ?

I have a couple of these manifolds knocking around, if anyone is interested in going this route, they might be available..

I did have to reclock turbo Andy I think about 30 deg from memory. Vnt ring did not need drilling though as holes line back up, I also modified actuator bracket to clear manifold. If you need part number for turbo let me now
