240Nm of smooth petrol torque, transmission should be ok on that in a light truck.

Depends on your driving style. Nothing is indestructible! I hear that it is possible to build an 094 that will handle 300Nm for high mileages but you wil spend a lot of money at Weddle Industries for a kick-off.
Maybe Aidan will contribute to this at some point...

Ok so the standard engine and box is missing at the mo out the truck so am I right in thinking any petrol type25 box will be adequate?

Depends on what gearing you want. There are a few ratios available and some command a premium.
Pardon me for saying, but it sounds like you need to do a lot more reading on the subject...

Yes I know that's what I'm trying to find I just can't find any info on a vr6 conversion anywhere, this is my first watercooled vw, put loads of wacky engines in bugs etc, just fancy something a bit different this time, sorry for coming across as being a bit thick ha ha

Bernd Jaeger? Winkler? You need to look at German parts suppliers.

Rob,
If you want to know what it takes to put a V6 in a pick up or crewcab read my thread as I purchased a crewcab with no engine and box and like you wanted to do something different. I put a 2.9 litre V6 24v cosworth motor in mine.
I purchased the conversion plate and other things from KEP in the states. The wiring out of the cosworth had 9 brains and we spent a week stripping it to a basic harness. Built the exhausts and engine mots myself and the thing is a hostile projectile when you hit the load pedal. I have 235s on the back and I can light them up without and issues if I require.

Re: Vr6 engine into type 25 is it possible
FYI on gearing Rob's VR6 Syncro is running standard gearing and bigger tyres, he reckons we could have lengthened 4th gear by 10%, I offered at the time he decided to stay stock, now after a few years he knows the van a little better and has settled on atyre size.
I'm building a box for another syncro customer, different final drive, but overall extra 5% on top gear, again running bigger than standard tyres, so you'd want a 4.57 final drive box in a 2wd ideally, 4 or 5 speed, do the conversion, be happy with the conversion drive it and then decide on any gearing changes and do them with a rebuild for the long haul, add the oiling plates as well and should be fine

Yep I've got the 2.9 Corrado lump in mine. Stonking engine. It is a big beast and you are best to remove the thermostat housing from the side (or back in the van engine bay) and relocating. That way you don't need to butcher the engine bay.
The 2.1 box is a pretty good match for the engine as well as the torque curve is similar to the 2.1.
I have in my Syncro
- Gearbox is an AAN with a 4.86 final drive. Manufactured on 10/12/85 (early box). 0.85 4th Gear ratio. Rebuilt by Aidan Talbot July 2010.
- Front Diff is an ADH
Wheels are big. 16" rims and 225/75.
If I was to change anything I would replace 4th with something slightly taller. 70 on the motorway is about 300rpm too high in top.
Oh and it sounds bloody amazing and goes like a scalded cat.

Re: Vr6 engine into type 25 is it possible
There was a young fella at Hockenheim 2012 who had put a VR6 into his 2wd velle and it was his first engine swap !!!
He said the performance was great but even when driven gently on a run the mpg (l/100km) was disappointing.
I dont like the cylinder head design on narrow vee engines, long and short ports crossing the head makes for a lot of heat transfer and the ports have to kink around the head studs iirc...

Re: Vr6 engine into type 25 is it possible
I get about 19/20mpg which isn't a million miles away from a stock 2.1. My van is heavy. Camping interior and full of crap most of the time and its a syncro. I would expect a couple more mpg if I had went to the taller gearing. I know my mates 16" Syncro with the 2.1 was doing around 24mpg. If it is running right it isn't too bad.
Sounds ace as well.
