Rust Bus revival

Post by snax »

Thought i would post up some pics and progress on Betty the rust bus ..
She is an 1980 air cooled 2.0
Didn't pay a lot for her initially, but i also went into it with my eyes open, the whole idea was to bring one back to life and who needs savings anyway.....

Here she is as the start not looking too bad really (she was !)

Image

First off the sill under the sliding door.....if anyone would like to make an offer for that bit of wood by the way,i think its pretty rare...

Image

Sliding door bottom two inches were covered by yet more wood so repair needed there as well....sorry wood sold....

Image

Another Arty rust shot....

Image

Should probably point out i actually started with all the windows out and new metal welded in...and i do mean all ! here's one !

Image

So up to this point nearside sill and surrounding area repaired and replaced, sliding door lower half replaced and fixed so it doesnt fall off when you try and open it..sigh...and all side windows removed ,metal replaced and made good.Heres a photo from the other side, still plenty to go at but progress and some painting done (Rustoleum)

Moved onto the Windscreen next which was cracked and it was pretty obvious the surrounding metal had issues

Not sure this repair panel is gonna make much difference...

Top of the screen and into the roof

and the other side

And some metal work later ready for the new seal and windscreen

The whole idea of restoring the van was also to keep it on the road as well so we could enjoy summer in her ,sooooo MOT time,i knew it would fail but it failed spectacularly
particularly rear suspension areas which due to underseal and waxoil over the years wasnt all that obvious to spot.
So anyway a few pics of rust......there's a theme here

Rear nearside panel off,...

Image

Rear offside ..i didnt giggle much at this

Image

And starting to look better,i dont really like posting the welding pics as i dont want my welders skills knocked,i think he's a flippin hero!

Image

Ill stick up the final bacth tomorrow which will bring the van pictures up to date and as it currently stands

Final note...passed MOT today..... :D
