Temperature gauge not working

Post by Jonnyb416 »

Hi all,

I have fitted a 1Y engine and the temperature gauge isn't working. Kinda important as I don't fancy boiling the engine!

I was thinking I may need one of these:

Any suggestions of what else I can check please?
Also, where is the sensor above situated?

Any help appreciated. Jon.

Anyone have any idea on this please? Don't want to buy the sender unit if it's going to be a wiring issue.

Afraid I don't know where the sensor is on a 1y, but once you've found it you can check the gauge by grounding the sensor wire, the gauge will go full over if gauge and wiring are good.

I had the same when I installed a different engine. The gauge worked when I grounded the wire to the engine block. I tried a different sender with no result. The problem was that the sender wasn't grounded because the hose flange wasn't making contact with the engine block, even though it was solidly bolted. I scraped away at the aluminium and bolted it up again and it has been OK since. Unlikely, but worth a try.

Thanks guys.
When I turn the ignition to live the temp light flashes and the needle goes right up. When the van is started the light stops flashing and the needle returns back and doesn't move at all.

Does this sound like the sensor or wiring?

To be honest it sounds like you've connected your temperature gauge wire to the oil pressure sensor!!!!!

Oil pressure sensor is grounded when engine is not running and open circuit when engine is running - if temp gauge was incorrectly connected to this then the gauge would show 'full hot' when the ignition was turned, then go to 'cold' when engine started!!!

You really need to find the temp sensor wire in the engine bay and confirm that it is connected to the correct temp sensor.

This is all very much beyond me to be honest. I have a neighbour that has helped me quite a bit but I'm struggling to find the time at the moment. It's booked in to see the bloke that did the conversion, so hopefully he will work it out.
