hi can anybody help me
i am having my gearbox rebuild by Aidan to suit my 1.9tdi a4 engine and want to upgrade the clutch while the box is out, but dont know what clutch would be best for the job it has a standard 1.6 diesel clutch which worked but want to change it to something better to cope, it will be used to tow a trailer with a vw sandrail max weight will be a ton at most

i have spoken to adian about the clutch but he is not sure which is the best as he doesn't really deal with diesels

which tdi engine? 1Z/ahu or afn

when aidan rebuilt my 3H i got him to put the tdi clutch shaft into the box so i could use the proper tdi clutch assembly, pulls my 2.6 ton bungalow around no probs

hi Busbuddy

i think it is a AHU, as it was swapped over in poland which they are not aloud to do over there
Aidan is putting in a 29/7 crown wheel and pinion from brickwerks
i am going to use a standard 1.6TDI clutch as just got a new one from B&Bs in maidstone that way i dont have to change the starter motor (which is not that old ) and then i can take off the over sized tyers so it looks normal and not like a syncro
so should be able to pull a sandrail on a trailer no problems (fingers crossed) and hopefully do more than 50MPH

I would suggest the 228mm flywheel from a TDI (or G60), with a TDI pressure plate (or VR6), an either a WBX friction plate and your T3 input shaft, or TDI friction plate and a TDI-spline input shaft.

If using a WBX friction plate take care as the centre hubs on these vary and can sometimes contact the release-bearing support tube when used in a TDI setup.

If fitting the TDI flywheel, you'll have to decide whether or not to mill it to retain access to the sump bolts behind and to retain the stock cover plate. I did not mill mine when I fitted my TDI, and fitted a flat cover plate.

If you use the T3 diesel 215mm clutch setup with a TDI I think you'll find it will start to slip quite soon.

are you not using the audi flywheel already?

like andy suggests i used the tdi flywheel, tdi pressure plate and a 2.1 wbx friction plate on mine for 4 years with no problems*...only reason i didnt fit the tdi input shaft was i didnt want to crack open the box at that time

now running the tdi input shaft and tdi friction plate

the jx starter fits the tdi flywheel with a minimal (2 minute) adjustment


* the wbx friction plate pulled my bungalow up porlock hill, sennen cove and up mountains in wales with no issues but whilst you have the box open you might as well put the tdi shaft in

He won't be using the Audi flywheel as it has the ring-gear on the engine side.
