How to make rock n roll bed level?

Post by Emma&Al »

I have an old westfalia style rock n roll bed in my Caravelle and recently ordered some new foam at 4 inches thick, 1 inch thicker that the original foam.
I've not yet covered it and fitted it onto the plywood and Ive now noticed that the section of foam that fits over the engine bay, is lower than the rest of the bed..at the moment its just sitting on the bare metal of the engine bay!
How do I resolve this? Do I need to build some sort of wooden structure at the back ?

Thanks all,
Emma :D

what's the level difference? perhaps you could buy a thicker piece of foam for the engine area.

Hi itchyfeet - I've not measured it precisely and I think its actually only about a few inches - I slept on it for the first time the other night and I noticed it quite a lot!
Good idea thought, i never thought of actually getting a bigger piece of foam - I feel a bit stupid as I just bought it from eFoam and didn't take into consideration that the actual seating part would be higher..

Add another thinner piece of foam would be cheaper, I guess you will be covering it which will keep the two pieces together.

Ours is similar, i think. The back of the bed rests on the engine bay. This creates a 35mm ish (about an 1.5" to the older folk!) difference. We have level cushions but the difference in density creates a problem. We stuck a piece of ply in as a temporary measure. If it is higher, you can be quite creative. https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=131623

what about a piece of polystyrene to make up the thickness? cheap, lightweight and insulating, just a thought, cheers.

Go for closed cell high density foam as used by garages for flooring or kneeling mats. It's tough so will take the weight like a lump of wood, but its light so even a thick piece won't be a pain.
