New SVDA , timing and vacuums ? And whirring noise ?
hi guys
After my van always running rubbish and overheating all the time, and asking some questions on hear I decided to dump the faulty Double vacuum dizzy and replace it with a power spark SVDA unit.
It's a 1981 2.0 cu Engine with twin Webber 34 ict's.
I've had a look on the wiki but couldn't find anything to exactly answer my questions so here goes !
I watched a top video on retro fitting one of these units but can't find part 2 which would of answered my questions.
Before, it was timed at 5 atdc, however the video said to now time it at 8 btdc but it didn't show the process.
Which carb pipe should I now blank off ? Cos I've only got advance now
And do I leave everything connected and time it 8 btdc, or plug the pipe and do it ? And at what RPM ?
Any advice on the correct procedure would be great cos I've read so many different ways, I'm not sure where I am !
And the other thing is , my van makes like a whining noise which is alway there while driving , doesn't matter if you dip the clutch or put it in neutral .
It only does it while driving and gets faster with your speed. Although it's a contestant noise , it's a sort of broken whine if that makes sence , sounds like a wheel bearing and when my van just failed its mot on a bearing I thought that was it but I had it changed and it's still there.
I've just changed the gearbox oil ( comma gl4 ) but still there ?
As always any advice is appreciated x

Let the engine run at idle until its warmed up and the chokes are off. Slowly turn the dizzie while pointing the strobe at the timing scale. The timing mark will move as you turn the dizzie. Once you get to 8 BTDC switch off the engine and nip up the dizzie clamping nut.however the video said to now time it at 8 btdc but it didn't show the process
Find a quiet, long hill and free-wheel down it with the engine off and the van in neutral. If the whining is still there it's probably wheel bearing related. If it's stopped try again in neutral with the engine running. If it's there it's the engine. If it's not the gearbox is all that's left.my van makes like a whining noise which is alway there while driving
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

Hi Boxy
Thanks for the reply.
Would you know if I do this with the vacuum pipe on or off ?
Also which side carb vacuum take off pipe should be blocked and which should be attached to the vacuum unit ?
Thanks in advance
Richard

Success at last with timing, but what's that noise ?
Success at last !
New distributor all timed properly and runs great.
Just need some more advice on the whirring noise.
I've tried down a hill, freewheeling in neutral and the noise is still there , sounds like " wha, wha, wha, wha, wha etc
It definitely gets faster in line with my speed.
It's just past it's MOT, there is no play in the wheel ( that I can feel ), tyres are new etc and I've just changed the gearbox oil .
Goes into gears etc fine although I do need to refurbish the linkage cos the bushes are shot.
Could it still be a wheel bearing or cv joint ??
Any ideas would be great

Does the noise change when cornering or when you apply brakes? If so what happens if you use the handbrake?

Re: New SVDA , timing and vacuums ? And whirring noise ?
Hi guys
Cheers for the thoughts.
The van has done this noise sinceI picked it up over a year ago.
It broke down on our first trip so had been parked up ever since until recently.
I had forgot about the noise until I recently got it going again lol
It did it before I had new tyres fitted ( and there are stickers on the new ones ).
Dizzy cap is definately seated correctly, makes no differance cornering and just slows down with my speed when I brake.
I'll check the rubber boots in the morning and maybe see if anything changes if I drive with the handbrake slightly on ( if that's a good idea ) ?
Cheers as always
Richard

Jack up the back and run it in gear, if its quiet then something at the front, if its noisy then might be able to tell where its coming from.
