High oil pressure

Post by molar38 »

Hi, hope someone can help, I have a 1986 1.9 petrol water cooled van and whilst about 40 miles into our last trip we encountered the oil pressure buzzer of doom ! It came on three times but did not stay on for long and seemed to be triggered by gradients and roundabouts. We did not stop and all was fine as was the return journey. I booked it in to a garage upon our return who did a pressure test and discovered that it was running at about 4 bar @2000 rpm when hot. I believe that this is a bit high and so they are going to do further investigation into this but i would like to know if anyone else has encountered this and am i in for some nasty surprises? The oil is the correct type and at the correct level as in had only recently serviced the van. Thanks in anticipation of your help, Chris.

My old dg van used to sound the buzzer on roundabouts when the level was low. 4bar at 2000 rpm when hot doesn't sound too extreme to me if the engine and oil is in good nick. It's not a direct comparison, but my Audi engine with 200000 miles runs at 3.0bar when hot, using 15w-40 semisynthetic.

Check where they measured the pressure
The low pressure switch where pressure should be measured is hidden behind push rod tube covers
The high pressure switch location is going to measure significantly higher
triggering on roundabouts will be wiring most likely

Where in soton are you? What garage?

Hi, thanks for that, not sure where they measured it from, but from the position of the mechanic under the van he was working where the low pressure switch is situated. I am using Gingers VW in Waterloovile and so far have been very happy, very nice people to deal with after getting terribly ripped off by a so called VW specialist in Soton.

Don't know gingers but always good to know of local mecanics who work on t25s
WBX seem to have low oil pressure compared to other engines worth checking the oil pressure relief valve is ok.
