Tdi ecu

Post by KINGPRAWN »

it seems like my ecu from a "96 golf tdi is too old to be supported by my " scangauge" ... (It never connects, just sits trying) !!!
If I find another ecu from a later car will it work ... Does something need to be done with the immobiliser within it ??? See them on eBay but no mention of what has to be done before I can fit it !

What ECU do you have? Part number?

I've got a '97 MSA15 on my AFN TDi, it's supported by VAGCOM but don't think I've had success with Scangauge, not that I've ever wanted to use it that is.

I have a pile of ECU's here and a Scangauge so can do some quick investigation if you wish. Give me a bell when you have your part number.

If Andy Can't do it then I can, I had to disable the immobiliser on mine to get it running 'headless' before I fitted it into the bus.

Mr. Prawn, the nearest ECU I've got to your 028906021B, is a 028906021C (MSA12 type) from June 1994, which doesn't have immo, so I suspect your B suffix doesn't either. These very early ECU's have a slightly different pinout to the later ones, and use an external air pressure sensor module in addition to the hose connecting to the inlet manifold. They are 8-bit CPU's and have a different internal construction, and software.

I've been working on a customers job today, which has an AF suffix ECU from a year or so later (December 1995), this did have immo (which I've disabled). This is also a black plastic case, 8-bit CPU. I just confirmed my Scangauge will not communicate with it.

I also just checked a 028906021AT (Passat 1Z, March 1996, MSA15.5) ECU, which is a metal case, 16-bit CPU. This does communicate with my Scangauge. The only significant difference on the pinout of this versus your very early ECU, is the GP indicator lamp is on a different pin. With the correct tool, it's quite easy to pop the pin from the ECU connector and move it, but you'll have to decide whether you want to do this. I wouldn't recommend running without a GP indicator.
