I'm really surprised if there's not something usable/modifiable. What's tencent use?silverbullet wrote:Not common with any other engine. Unique combination of lengths, diameter, design of head etc.

Re: WBX big end bolts available again!
Chris uses aftermarket rods iirc
There is nothing wrong with the 025 rods IMO. Because I had 98mm piston sets made with 24mm pins and I now have a jig and programming etc to lighten them, I want to continue with that plan.
All for want of a few big end bolts...

Re: WBX big end bolts available again!
PS part of the problem is the straight knurled shank and the 9mm fine thread.

The rest is a bit beyond me, but a quick google finds Mercedes use M9x1.0 stretch big-end bolts across a bunch of engines. 52mm long, external splined heads.silverbullet wrote:PS part of the problem is the straight knurled shank and the 9mm fine thread.
Worth a fiver to get hold of one and see if it'd do?

Re: WBX big end bolts available again!
Sorry but it in no way resembles the wbx bolt, which uses a nut (as opposed to a thread tapped conrod)

Re: WBX big end bolts available again!
If you read Gowesty's blurb for their engines, the use of OEM non-stretch bolts is a feature.

Re: WBX big end bolts available again!
Its a backward step imho, like using an 009 distributor... but I may have to cave in just to get things moving.

I'm assuming it isn't as easy as buying a larger bolt, machining and rethreading it to suit?silverbullet wrote:PS part of the problem is the straight knurled shank and the 9mm fine thread.

Re: WBX big end bolts available again!
Glad to see this topic up on the forum. Serious stuff hey for us WBX builders.
Err, I have to say, I'm re-using the stretch bolts, but on second time around tightening them up to a torque setting. I think it's around 60nm, (45 lbs) but not sure.
Anyway, I'm not sure that Peter Gunzul is supplying stretch bolts or non stretch bolts and yes, stocks are out again....Bernd doesn't do WBX, he's into diesels.
When talking to the 'old boy's', they prefer the non stretch bolts, but I hear
here, that from a technical point of view, the stretch bolts are better (when new).
This morning I pulled down a MV block, sounded as sweet as sweet (cylinder head issues),
covered about 140K miles, thought it would be a very quick and straight forward rebuild.
Unlocked the stretch bolt big end caps and...... horror of horrors. They were all copper and not only that, they were distorted. Never saw this before & seriously, as sweet as sweet engine!.....Now I have to run around with all sorts of measures. The shells were almost stuck to the crank and when lifting off the con-rods, the shells stayed put. Very strange.
You see, you can never ever 'not' split a boxer engine. Has to be the whole way.
I've re-stretched cylinder head bolts a hundred times, no problem, but never tried a twice with the big end cap or on the crankshaft/flywheel. Maybe it's a matter of feel, but for me, the good old torque wrench gives me a very good feeling. If 45 pound is familiar, I reckon that's about what they should be.
But one thing is for sure, if you are going to stretch the big ends tight, make sure they are brand new nuts and bolts before you try this.
I'll stick to the Torque wrench and give my customers a two years guarantee that that's OK....... So far, So good.
