Snapped v-belt, steam, hard shoulder time

Post by bhagatsingh »

hi,

taking my T25 1986 1.9 home last night - suddenly the temp hit up, steam coming from the engine, water dripping from the back, engine cut out. Some nice people helped me push the van over to the hard shoulder of the M25, had a look and the v-belt had snapped (was a 1 year old belt). Recently, the water pump has been screeching on start-up which makes me think the waterpump has seized up.

I think I need to get myself a new water pump...but im a little predicament as for complicated reasons I need to get it back home (30 miles) this weekend in order to work on it. Is it possible to put my old v-belt on and grease up the water pump just to get it back? Anything I should check, before I attempt this?

Any help would be much appreciated. The joys...

It sounds like you left it too late replacing the water pump. If it was making nasty noises it was knackered and should have been replaced. As a consequence you may have cooked your engine. Get you breakdown service to pick it up to save making things worse. Good luck.

Deffo can't do this where it is. May be salvagable (mine was) but takes a lot of work to put everything right.

Took it to the garage, engine's cooked! Was nothing to do with water pump in the end.

The bolts holding the alternator to the chassis had snapped, snapping the belt -- must have been too long driving with no water pump i guess...wasn't long. pretty gutted where do I go from here?
