1.9 water cooled engine blown up

Post by the gardners »

My 1.9 water cooled autosleeper has sadly given up the ghost, with the oil light flashing and a buzzer that I have never heard before, after stopping and taking a look there was oil gushing out of the rocker covers and smoke everywhere.
So now my dilemma is 2.0 air cooled or 1.6 tdi conversion there my options at the minute from our local VW guru, was going to go down the scooby route by really want at Gypsy as family getting older and need more space.
Thoughts please?

Aircooled no, whoever gave that advice ignore them
Second hand 1.9 dg is easiest if you can find one
How quick do you need the van?
yours may be repairable.

It is now going to be a winter project to get it ready for next year so not that rushed, the advice I have had sad the engine is cooked and don't waste my money trying to repair?
I have also be told to be very weary where I get an engine from as there are lots of bad ones out there, I have even been warned of reconditioned?

Reconditioned is just an old engine thats been repaired and repainted and may cost around a thousand.
Remanufactured is an engine brought back to factory condition but that would cost many thousands.

Any second hand engine or recon engine is a risk yes.

lots of difrerent engines can be fitted from donor vehicles but these engines are also old and a risk and mods are required.

no guaranteed option is low cost, ask yourself what are you prepared to pay?
