sounds like you have a 5 speed gearstick with a poorly plunger with no cap on it so metal to metal contact

Drop the spare wheel and have a gander with a torch. Its easier with someone above making the gear changes above but it should be obvious whats happening and only takes a few minutes. Take some pics.

Its an hour well spent.
A lot easier if you drive the front end onto ramps, drop the spare and use the clamshell as a backrest!

I don't have to push down to select first on mine - I move the lever over to the left till it stops (spring loading as marlin owner says) then just move it left again and you can 'feel' it select and then down into first.

That explains it. Those that suggested so we're right. Wonder why someone fitted this? It's the original engine and gearbox I think

5speed ones are rare, if there was a problem with your old one like a broken gearstick that could not be repaired, it could have been the cheapest option

Ooo err missus! All good here Martin, hope all's well with you mate. Not got any plans for any meets at the moment but I'll probably be down your way in the not to distant future so will give you a holler!
