Once you go black...

Post by Smosh »

I'm getting my van resprayed at present so I need a quick decision. I have the opportunity to go a different colour on the roof. as my van is white, I am thinking of painting the pop-top Black. 8)

...but am I going to cook us all inside?

I suspect a black roof may be 20-30 degrees hotter (number pulled out my...) But, I think with it being Fibreglass the conduction would be minimal, particularly with an air gap and insulation lining the inside of the roof.

What do you all think?

thanks,

Josh

I think that it would be too much of a contrast, to help you decide can you visualise the black high top in something like photoshop?

Go for it and ignore all those naysayers who will no doubt be along soon. I mean think of the time savings in cooking alone as you could leave your supper just under the roof while you drive along and then it will be done when you get there.

Have you thought about a nice pale grey instead?

I tried Photoshop, failed miserably! Just looked cartoon like!

Haha that would be handy! Just think I could start a trend with westfalia owners. They could paint there roofs black and finally have a toaster! :run
I'm not convinced by a pale grey tbh, not with white. Maybe a darker grey?

I personally think it will look good, especially if you have alloys and they are black ?

Personally I would go the same colour as your van. Reason being I have seen a couple of vans with roofs a different colour and they either look like they have been robbed off another van, or look like they were bought new from a pop top roof manulacturer with the intention that the owners paint them to match their vans, but they just couldn't be bothered and fitted them in a rush. Totally your choice but just because you can doesn't mean to say you have to :?

Couple pics of mine white with black roof.

Not an intentional decision just so happened the Westy pop top I bought was sprayed black and I didn't have time to re-spray it before fitting. The van was a tintop before with a white roof and can't say as I've noticed any difference in internal temp since the change. My pop top canvas has 3 large vents though so I just open all those up and get a nice breeze through.

BTW it's not a T25 white (from an Audi TT in fact)

I think white has won out. Thanks for the pictures Lee. I do like the black roof look, but it does emphasis that its a pop top and i think as i am having a full respray the roof matching will look best. That said if I had a tiptop id have gone black!
