Hi I am in urgent need of some advice, I am trying to replace the main drive shaft seal on my early cs non turbo diesel. I have got the sprocket off but there apears to be a metal covering hiding the seal....is this just an early type of seal that I just need to remove or do I need to remove the mounting plate (Take the pump off, which I would rather not do). The replacement seal I have has no metal on the outside at all!!
Please help I am stuck and need the van for tomorrow
Thanks

Just to be clear the seal is the Shaft Seal for Diesel injection pump 17mm....I can not find anywhere that says if you need to remove the mounting plate.........I do not want to wreck anything......I have found this image
from a post on here but mine appears to have a metal covering over the seal
I am very desperate for any advice

Re: Urgent help diesel fuel pump seal removal problem
Slightly confused here!
It is the fuel injection pump seal that you are talking about - just that you mention main drive shaft seal?
Just looked at a JX pump that I have sitting around - the seal appears to be 30mm x 17mm bore. On this pump it is a steel encased seal the same as that photo. I can't see that coming out very easily even with the pump off but have never tried though.Maybe someone has attempted it but I don't recollect seeing any posts about it. It looks more like it is a Bosch agent job to me - someone may know different.
To attempt it looks like a case of drilling the seal case and inserting screws to get a grip of it.

Thanks OBG I have managed to extract the little B*gger.....The new seal looks just like the brown one in the photo, the old seal is the same size but instead of a rubber/plastic outer the old one has a metal casing. The shiny rings are part of the pump housing and do not come off.

Re: Urgent help diesel fuel pump seal removal problem
Quick update, a drive to Cornwall and back and no further problems, the camper starts first time now, it had been taking longer to "catch" until I did this. I guess the diesel was leaking back down the return fuel lines due to air getting in the faulty seal so the pump was having to self prime itself at every start up.
The symptoms I had been experiencing for future reference were
I had been trying different solutions to cure these faults but the replacing the leaky seal has cured it.
I had previously renewed the fuel filter, drained the water from the fuel filter (there wasn't any that I could see) renewed the air filter, replaced the snorkel tube, replaced lots of fuel hoses and in desperation turned the idle speed up. None of these cured the problem, my clue to the leak came whilst under the engine, I saw a drip from below the timing belt guard, it looked like oil at first but it was diesel. Whilst changing the timing belt I could see that the leak was from behind the fuel pump sprocket.
I hope this information may help others with similar symptoms.

- Long cranking required to initially start first time each day
Lumpy running occasionally
Intermittent stalling when Idling (it seemed to be dropping a cylinder or two)
Stalling when changing down gears on steep hills
