This is from a 1.9 DG, will I be able to re-use or is it shot.
This bearing is well shot (from timing gear end)
If I replace were is the best place to buy.
Is there a cam that would help performance a little.
It's very worn yes and so should be replaced, you could refit it if funds are tight but it's not got a long life left.

Why do you think that cam thrust bearing is shot? They are sintered bronze unlike the other two which are white metalled.
That cam does look well scuffed.
Thanks for the replies, thought the thrust bearing was shot because of the colour & its quite rough to the touch bit like wet and dry paper.
The cam from VWheritage is more than I would like to pay but I can’t put it back together with the old one.

If so what about timing gears aren’t there different sizes?

2.1 has different lift and profile to 1.9, the early DF/DG is different again.
The 1.9 is probably (certainly?) more sensitive to over-camming and loss if low-rpm torque.
No timing data so who knows what they are selling there.

PS what is the number stamped on the back edge of your timing gear? Anything from -5 to +5
My cam gear is stamped -3. Ive emailed VW Heritage about the diffrent gears so fingers crossed.
On a diffrent note does anyone Know where can I get an oil pressure release vale for the DG.
I found them for Aircooled but have no idea if they are the same.
This being the reason this engine got stripped down and my attack of Tourettes when I found there wasnt one fitted.

But does it need to be the size that came out? Surely there would be some wear, Bentley says rotate crank backwards and cam should not lift out of bearings, if it does install smaller timing gear however backlash should be 0.0 to 0.05mm.

Just to update:-
Got a reply from VW Heritage they say there genuine camshafts are +/- 0 on the gear.
However they're offering a camshaft for a 1.9 DG that’s -3. It is a special order so will take 3-4 weeks, not a problem to me the engine has been on my bench for 12 months now. (as the wife likes to remind me).
So I am probably going to take that route.
