Hi
I am wondering if it's worth while replacing my solex carbs with twin webers or with the one single unit from just kampers .Would webers give me more power or just more acceleration My motor is Aircooled 2 litre
I'm pretty happy with the way it runs but just thought I'd ask anyway

I have a 2.0 CU engine. I replaced my twin Solex set up with a twin Weber set-up earlier this year.
The twin Solex set-up was tired and causing issues (hard to balance, lacking power, poor emissions) - which was my main motivation for replacement.
The twin Webers are brilliant in comparison, but to be honest it is probably not a fair comparison. I will now confidently tackle any hills and seem to have some power in reserve. Only disadvantage so far is that there is no choke - so need to warm the camper up for five minutes before starting off on a journey.
It is really difficult finding good advice on the internet about carbs because there are so many differing views about the same set-up. I suspect that whoever does the install for you might have a big bearing on the results you get at the end. My guy only deals with VWs and seems to know his stuff inside out.... although he did advise all I would need is a single Weber!!

Of all the CU owners I have known when they fitted Delorto DRLA carbs the talk of hill slowing never occurred again.
They mainly talked about the grin inducing torque delivery, and the delicious sound they gave the engine.

Gee this all sounds really great I already love the sound
I've got another question what is average cruising speed on motorway
I'm in Belgium and mine feels good between 90 to 100 k is that about it ?
Don't want to blow anything up just yet but like the ideas of these carbs already got nice torque in 3rd and 4th

What MPG do you get with the twin Webbers? I too have a twin solex 2.0l CU and am thinking about changing.

I think the Delortos are no longer manufactured, so you will need to keep an eye out on ebay or VW forums for a suitable pair of second hand carbs now. They were almost twice the cost of the new Webers I have.
I have only used the camper on the motorway once since fitting the twin Webers (I live on the Isle of Wight so hill climbing is a must but cruising speed is not so essential!). 70mph was easily done, but it felt like it was straining (maybe related to the four speed box I have?) but 55-60mph felt comfortable. This was fully laden with camping gear two adults and two kids. We are going on a trip to Weymouth this weekend which should test it again....
MPG? I have not measured the MPG on my camper as it would probably scare me to death! Just on gut feel I reckon the mpg is about the same as the Solex carbs. Last week, it went for an MOT and my mechanic has adjusted the carbs saying they were a little rich. He reckons my mpg should improve. I will report back after next weekend....

No worries. I get a up to 25 mpg on the solex at the mo so the same would be excellent!

In carburettor land more power generally comes at a cost if you use it.
With a steadier right foot fuel economy could be the same at around 20.
With Delortos it's just too tempting not to make it growl.
Fitting Dells is not simply plug and play, they have to be set up correctly using a rolling road.
As they are very accurate/sensitive metering devices this is not cheap and neither are the carbs.
A friend of mine fitted a set of DRLA 40's to a DJ 2.1... It had startling acceleration.

Just to add to my previous posts....
MPG from my webers this weekend was 23.8mpg. This was M27, A31 (very stop-starty on Saturday morning !
) - so I reckon a clear run could see more. I was pretty happy with that. Cruising speed on the motorway seemed best around 60 - 65mph. Below 60, I found the momentum and power sometimes slowed me down to 50mph on climbs. Above 60mph I seemed able to conserve momentum and have more power with the higher revs....

Looks like if I changed I wouldn't see any difference in MPG but an increase in power so all good as far as I'm concerned!!
