Fridge won't ignite

Post by Gillski »

I spent last summer using my fridge as a cool box and paying for ice blocks at campsites. I'm told it just needs a new ignition thingy. Where would I get one of these and how easy is it to fit? I live in South West London but obviously the van has wheels and an engine ....

Do you mean the 'piezo ignitor'? (The bit you push that makes a clunk noise and, ideally, a spark!)

If so, what model of fridge? (Electrolux RM212 for example).

before you buy a new part make sure it is receiving power, earthed and the connections are ok
Make sure the fuse is ok
Make sure you are trying to light it correctly

Thank you for that ebay link. £64 is quite a lot of money - now seriously thinking about whether to do solar panels and get a really power efficient fridge. Mind you - it's chucking it down with rain now and my house solar panels are only making 44w!

Do these vans ever stop eating money?

Could just be a build up of crud between the ignitor and its earthing point preventing a spark. Its happened to me twice already this year. Think it might be dog hair getting underneath the fridge and somehow attaching it itself to the ignitor. Sort of starts a stalagmite process until there is no gap to spark across.

30 min job to whip fridge out clean up an put back in. Although granted the first time will take a little longer but I can now disconnect the fridge and get it out in 10 mins.

Interesting! I bought the van from a dog owner! Worth a look I think. Bracing myself for it.
