Hi All,
Newbie here, I'm John in South London but soon to be moving to Somerset all things being well! We've just become proud owners of a lovely 1982 T25, well looked after camper in excellent nic. Forgive me, I'm sure it's been covered before and I have checked the archives with no success but having done a couple of long runs it looks like she's returning 24 mpg - is this normal? Took it steady at about 50/60 mph on motorway. I was hoping for a late 20's maybe 30mpg. Previous owner did say the carbs may need rejetting, would this help?
I have other things I need help with, but top of the list is the roof (obviously ha). It's a pop up with rigid sides but I'd prefer a 3/4 length lift up (Westfalia??). Would it be sacrilege to change it? if not can anyone recommend anyone in the South that could do this job?
Cheers,
John.
ps. would post a pic but see how

Suggest you go to the Wiki above ^^ and search for MPG.
But 20 to 25 is the right ball park for a 1.9l petrol 4 speed manual gear box, if that's what you have. It depends a lot on how heavy your boots are!
To post pics, open a Photobucket account (or similar), if you haven't already got one. Upload the pics to Photobucket, then copy and paste the [Img] code into your thread here..
As the Meerkats say - 'Simples!'
Hope you enjoy your van and Zomerzet.

Welcome.
Yep that's normal on a run. You've bought a 33 year old, 2 ton old technology camper van, not a modern car. Around town you will be lucky to get 15mpg. Enjoy the camping, but you won't improve mpg on petrol. Check the wiki about conversion to LPG. MPG doesn't improve but LPG is much cheaper.
As one of them owned a T25 as a project for Aerospace Apprentices with the use of a wind tunnel they took his 1985 2L water cooled and highly polished it, removed the front bumpers, wipers, wing mirrors and ground off the forward facing seams either side of the windscreen and blocked off the grill aperture. The bed, cooker , Fridge and Loo were removed and with windows closed they got 30 MPG on a run and did the magic ton (100 MPH) down a steep slope with a following wind.
And if you believe that you'll believe anything.
I don't get the mpg question .... when people ask me and i say....i really do not know. They look shocked but i also do not really care . (I am trying not to sound snotty it is hard in text). But the way i see it is this .
I have three kids.
I like to go go camping .
I need a van for work (carpenter) .
So it stands to reason an i30 is of no use to me. So i need a car big enough to do these things unfortunately my big car will be thirsty. But it does all the jobs i need it for . So it costs what it costs is that not right? Just drive it enjoy it camp in it . If you really like it you wuold drive it even if it did 15 to the gallon. . IF LIFE IS A JOURNEY SOD IT IM BRING THE CAMPER VAN. Says it all really our van (betsy) is part of the family. So she costs what she costs.
If life is a journey .....sod it im bringing the camper van..
1983 moonraker . Or just BETSY.
I won't get hung up on the mpg issue for sure but as a new owner I have little idea on running costs and just wanted a feel for what to expect. There is a distinct waft of fuel when driving which from my old Ford days meant rich running or possible fuel leak which would affect consumption right?
Also, I'm interested in the LPG option and started making enquiries. Spoke to Anna at Campershack who was very helpful & knowledgeable but they aren't fitting any kits to Aircooled motors at present as they don't have a kit that fully complies with current regs. I'll keep looking and investigating.
Cheers,
John.

As stated on our website, all our conversions are done to COP11 standards, and the exhaust heated probe to heat the lpg on aircooleds doesn't meet COP11 guidelines, so we don't fit them. Consequently we don't currently do Aircooled conversions, although we are working on a fully compliant alternative solution...

My 1.9l 4 speeder struggled to top 25mpg but the engine is soo weedy that you end up using the accelerator like an on/off switch. So I did a 2.5l Subaru RJES conversion and now get high 20's. However the conversion cost a fair few grand, so lets not kid ourselves that I'm saving any money.
It just sounds better and runs even better still, cooler and starts every time.
