Help, please! Registering a German VW T25 in UK

Post by oliverk »

I have a 1988 LHD T25 Multivan which I owned since new. It's currently registered in Germany and I would like to bring it to the UK permanently and therefore get registered here.
I have spoken to the DVLA previously and as part of getting it registered in the UK I understand I will need to change the headlights (square version) for driving on the left and also change the speedometer to miles (only kph at present). The van doesn't have a fog light and I am not sure if one needs to be fitted for the UK.
I wonder whether anyone else has been through this process. Is this really necessary for a 27 year old vehicle (to be honest the current lights seem hardly strong enough to notice the difference between left and right)? And where would I get the parts? The square lamps and the speedometer dial seem impossible to source.

I am getting a bit desperate as it otherwise seems impossible to take my van with me.

Thanks for any help and advice you can give!

MPH Speedo should be easy to find. RHD square lamps are simply a matter of paying the going rate or putting beam benders on them (understanding mot man required)

Will need a fog light, may be able to convert existing rear lights to include fog light. You can add stickers to speedo dial for mph, that will pass MOT. Odometer in km is fine for MOT.

Not sure whether you need to get a conformity check as your van will be older than the 10 years old cutoff for VCA approval?

Fog light you'll need for MOT and that will probably require wiring run from the dash down the van to the rear - you'll likely that find one of the rear clusters already has the required contacts so you just need to add the wiring.

KPH speedo has not been a problem on our van for MOT but if you're bothered you can get a replacement dial here:

Headlights for MOT we've never had a problem with applied masks:

Good luck

Thank you all for your comments so far!

It's interesting to hear that some of you think that headlight masks and stickers for the speedo will do. This certainly would make life easier. I imagine the MOT inspector may be forgiving. What concerns me is that the DVLA wanted proof that these modifications (stickers not accepted apparently) had been made in addition to passing MOT.

Rear fog wiring will be present at 7-pin plug in engine bay junction box (grey with white tracer)

Our 1985 Westy has gone through 2 MOTs since registration with beam benders and kph speedo with no issues. (Already had a fog light though)
cheers

All doable with injection of cash...

Or convert to round headlights for £100 or so including grille, fit speedo face as in previous post, could do all required for £200 or so.

Speedometer plate changed to mph, fog light fitted, lights masked only, MOT done. Now hoping the DVLA accepts all of this and my van passes its citizenship test.

is their requirement for rhd lights and mph speedo just what they said over the phone or does it state that on the new v55/5 form?
