Sorry lads, help needed.
Hey all. I have a 1.6d. Changed the fuel filter and now it won't start. Undid the injectors but it seems like the pump isn't getting the fuel. Any help much appreciated

Did you fill the fuel filter with fuel before fitting?

Eh....no. I thought of my error and filled it but I was obviously too late by the looks of things

If it's filled now, it should be ok.. You might just need to give the pump a hand, those rubber bellows that fit on the fuel line can be handy for that.

Right. What fuel line do you need to draw the air through? I checked the injectors and the fuel isn't coming through when the engine turns.

If you've filled up your filter and connected everything up, loosen the pipes off on the injectors, make sure your battery is well charged and then go for it. Turn the engine over for ten seconds and then stop for twenty, then repeat. You should start to see the fuel moving along the feed pipe to the injector pump. Then you'll get froth at the injectors and then diesel at which point tighten the pipes up again and try turning it over. The breaks are to stop the starter overheating.
One silly thing to check before you start - make sure there's diesel in your tank.

No expert, but if it was me I'd would draw it from the return Hose from the pump. That way you will pull it from the flow and through the pump. Might give you a fighting chance as the pump will then have fuel in it.
As above though, a strong battery and plenty of cranking normally draws it through

Be intrigued to hear what people say.
I'd suggest crack off injectors, turn it over couple of times with full throttle so you get maximum flow
I've never actually had this problem but it's coming, new fuel tank going in and the engines been out for a while. Previously when changing the fuel filter
People fit bulb pumps for this reason

I tried it with two of the injectors undone but no fuel coming out earlier. I will try with all four tomorrow evening after work. Would have stuck with it tonight but it's absolutely bucketing down here. Irish summer eh. Excuse my ignorance but which pipe is the return?? I as far from a mechanic as you would get but thought this would be an easy job so chanced it myself. Hindsight is 20 20.

I forgot to fill the filter and it would not start either, even when I filled it up it still took ages to get going.

After many attempts I took a good look at the new filter, and then I decked that there was a very slight difference in it that allowed air to enter the system. Back in with the old filter and away she went. Fecking idiot.
