So there is a groove that looks almost perfect for an o ring
looks to me like 1mm x 65mm ID viton oring would fit right in with about 0.2mm compression.
just got to tickle a little metal away where as feed channel comes in.
anybody done it?

Yep. I machine the front to take a BS standard size 2.5 section one.
That groove has a breakout in it and is only a cast-in feature, no idea of its purpose but no good for even clamping, plus they vary a lot.

Re: wbx oil pump o ring
Thanks
most of us can't do that in the shed so are machined pumps available on the market?
I know it's not ideal o ring conditions but I'd think somebody would have tried this by now with an o ring in the standard pump groove.

Re: wbx oil pump o ring
The groove is vented to the low pressure side, and is a shunt for any leakage from the high pressure part of the pump back into the engine. If the groove wasn't there, any leakage would appear outside the engine. It's not for an O ring.
When you replace the cover, note that the gaskets currently supplied appear to be too thick (about 10 thou in old money). If you use one of these thicker gaskets, it is very likely that the pump won't prime due to excessive end clearance of the rotor, so you won't get oil pressure when you start the engine. The original gaskets were VERY thin (about 2 thou). I've heard that kitchen greasproof paper is about right but haven't tried it myself.
The thicker gaskets are correct betweeen the pump body and the engine.

Re: wbx oil pump o ring
Thanks
Made a paper gasket last time for that reason.

Still think an o ring may be possible with stock groove ( have been measuring up meyle pump) and the more people say it can't be done the more I want to try it
How long it stays sealed is a different matter, o rings have a life.
