Thinking about swapping my standard cab and sliding door interior lights for led bulbs, anyone got any recommendations?

Just bought some 5mm green LEDs (incl resistor suitable for 12v) from Maplins. Five of them for about £3.50. Idea is to remove OE dash lights entirely and light dials up properly so I don't have to squint at fuel guage. LEDs generally last many many years so I'll hotglue them in place. Bonus having the resistor incorporated as its a simple soldering job then. They will go with the new green LED digital clock thats replacing defunct OE digital unit.

Will WIKI it all (including source for clock) in case anyone else likes what I've done. The new clock reads time, external temperature, and volts.

Yes I know you can buy LED versions of original bulbs but I think this will look better as well as being cheaper.

Be interesting to see if the clock/temp/volts is the same as I have fitted (except mine is red). I came across an interesting issue when the clock was wired to ign 12v derived from the input to the voltage stabiliser - it caused the temp warning light to come on when the temp was slightly higher than normal, eg in heavy traffic... Now wired to leisure battery.

Re original question: things to consider.

What are your aims i.e. Brighter/lower power/original look?

Those from CVC are low consuming 'warm white' but will be no brighter than original...if thats what you want?

Lots available MUCH brighter but generally they are harsh white light.

Again...look for 'warm white' if you want a light that isn't as harsh.

Thanks for the input, I'm going to pickup 2 bulbs from a local motor factors tomorrow, they are worth tying out as they're £6 for the pair. In answer to your question, I'm after a bit of both, thats low power consumption when I'm not hooked up or wild camping and a better light than the original (rather dim) bulbs that I currently have fitted.

Considered something like this? I never use the old interior lights now as these give you a lot more options, don't consume much at all and are cheap. I got a long length with controller for £8 on ebay

Just finished. Pic not great quality as taken on the mobile on my workbench but you get the idea. Will take some better ones once installed. Total cost - tenner and a bit of time to solder everything.

Settled for two 10mm green LED bulbs (+ two 390 ohm resistors to drop them down to 12v system) from Maplins as it only needed minor mod to bulb holders for them to push straight in without even glueing. LED bulbs outlast conventional ones but not a prob to fit another in the future.

Clock below shows time, temp, battery voltage on a rotational basis. Much prefer the LED clock - easier to see.

Had planned to make small holes for clock adjustment buttons but concluded it was simpler to mount those buttons (which come on a long lead to clock) under dash cowl if I ever needed to reset clock. It has a built-in battery so will hold the time indefinately if power is off (ie when parked up) although can't see it consuming enough to worry about anyway.

My dash is already hard-wired which means its so much easier to add extra items or modify.

Basically you'll get the clock/voltage/temp unit, the probe (best fed to outside in my view), and attached two buttons to change time which to be honest I glued on top of one of the plastic pods under dash cowl, and three wires red (power), black (negative) and green which is the voltage sensor (can be tied in with red if you like).

Cheap anyway and better (in my view) than original LCD one. If you don't have an LCD clock, you can still cut a hole to fit this unit. You just need to provide the 12 volts basically. I wired mine to come on with the lights (some may prefer a permanent feed). The onboard clock battery holds the time so even if you remove battery it'll remember it.

Green LEDs to clocks which replaced dash lights, I bought seperately, just give it an aircraft feel.

Check dimensions of clock you buy - they vary.
