vibrating gear stick

Post by rubyvan »

Hi
I have a problem with the gear stick vibrating, you cannot see it moving , but one can hear it and feel it vibrating.
Just to give you a little background.
The van ( 5 speed 1.6 td) went over a large pothole and knocked the gear out of alignment as I could no longer select any gear except third
The van limped home and we replaced the ball for the relay lever or onion and the corresponding gear lever for the side of the box or relay lever at the gear box end. We also replaced the front bush kit at the front, underneath the gearstick.

Having done this, the gear stick now vibrates but only when it is pushed to the left in neutral and it also vibrates in first gear. However it doesnt do this when you move it over slightly to the middle in neutral and in any other gear apart from 1'st.
Does any one have any idea of whats going on
Cheers
steve

Mine vibrated in neutral and 5th gear. Lubing everything with MoS2 grease and doing some aligment of the mechanism helped me to get rid of the vibration.

Mine used to until I changed the gearstick knob to one from (I think) a BMW. The stock one is solid whereas most good modern ones have some kind of damping within the core. Duff engine mounts can make for bad vibration though - more noticeable if you're chugging in the wrong gear.

Just had a chat about shifting mechanism with other local T3 enthusiasts in the weekend. They recommend other more modern greases that cannot dry out or cannot be washed out to lube, and the NLA middle dust cover seems to have a big job in the easy gear change.

Have you check the plastic pads on the fork on the bottom of the stick? I had 'lost' mine. Stuck new ones on. No vibration. :ok
