I am thinking of putting in one of the dual gauge pods from Brickwerks to house an oil temperature gauge as I want to monitor the new AGG setup.

I will have a spare hole and wondered what would be best to go in.

My thinking is oil pressure but assumed this was already monitored (at least on my early van for low pressure)


Another question,
On my first run with the new engine I noticed the water temp hardly moved from cold on a 15 mile run, It did go over half way when I was adding coolant/bleeding.

I am connected to the GTi sender and am wondering if they are not quite compatible and i may have to install a different water temp sensor.
Am I correct?

With regards to the water temp.
Mine has the same issue, the temp. needle hardly every clears the white.
I have still to get a clear answer - should it be the GTi sensor or the original sensor?

Oil temperature is important when measuring oil pressure so that seems like the right compliment to me.

Air fuel is fun to watch

Volts is useful if you are camping but not much use when driving

Amps is hard to wire

Water temp is pointless as you have that on the dash anyway ( once you fix it)

Geiger counter perhaps?

Depends at what point you came into the VW scene and what you drove before. Personally I think VW had it about right on the bug by keeping it simple and down to the stuff you actually need to know about rather than things you think you need to know about. On vehicles this old, too many gauges can leave you a nervous wreck and not concentrating on the road.

Only thing I found useful was a voltmeter on the leisure. The rest I'd rather be blissfully ignorant of and just keep on top of oil and water levels. :D

Yep, agree with you but as I have changed engine's and reading garyd's AGG bible, he was worried that the oil temp got to 120 degrees on a long hill climb, which led him to fit separate oil cooler.

I want a reliable setup for a European trip next year so aiming to use this season to iron out as many niggles/weak points as I can.

I thought about oil pressure / temp. and them dismissed them, I'm a bit like Covkid.

I've done numerous 400km blasts at 150+, toured France fully loaded in 40+ heat and so far so good (touches wood).

The only thing that I would really like to do now is update the clocks to get the MFA info and fit a VSS.

My oil pressure and temp guages gave me great confidence this last two weeks on a 750 mile trip to France, if you have concerns, as I did they should help, the fact they were consistant and steady stopped me worrying.

Before I fitted them, and an oil cooler, I had occasional buzzer trips and when measured with a portable guage pressure was low particularly when hot, the guages showed me that the engine is tired, a new pump made a little better but an oil cooler was a great improvement, without the guages I would have been stabbing in the dark.

Didn't see the need for them the last 30,000 miles over the last 8 years though.

I think the engine has more life yet but they should help me tell when to call it a day.

I have had the buzzer of doom a couple of times since i had my van. To be honest I used to monitor my oil pressure religiously when I had my 1275GT so I guess I miss not having the option in my van now, so I know what itchyfeet is talking about with the above statement. I am thinking about the Brickwerks dual pod holder for the ashtray but would like to monitor both oil pressure and temp. I am mindfull not to threadjack but would like to know how much work there would be to plumb in such a set up. There is an article here which does mention the Brickwerks pod solution:
