...Do I have a 1.6 or a 1.7 engine ??

Post by sternal »

Having owned the van for almost 2 years I was under the impression I had a 1.6 engine all parts that I have bought have been for 1.6 including cambelt oil/fuel filters etc and have all fitted perfectly...so why do I ask then ? Today I was having a good look under the van having taken off the engine tray/cover and I see this on the bottom of the engine

So is this normal for a 1.6 to have this stamped on the bottom ?

Its an ex German post office van ! Looking at the wiki this would imply that it could well be a 1.7 !

I wait nervously for replies !

Okay this gets stranger found the original paperwork which clearly states cm3 01695 which is clearly a 1.7 the DVla had this and still registered it as a 1.6 !

The German owner told me it was a 1.6 so that what's put on the forms when I registered the van, so much for the DVla looking at the original forms !

Do I now need to inform my insurance and the DVla ?

I would.Your insurers could use this as an excuse not to pay you, should you ever need to make a claim.

acording to the brickyard this engine was only fitted from KY 1,7l 4-cyl. Upright Diesel from 87on 42Kw / 57bhp. Technical Data.

van is 1985 not 1987 !

also says its a Capacity (cubic Centimeters) 1716 on brickyard where as the paperwork says 1695 cm3

would there be a KY or CS anywhere on the engine block ????

Insurance £8 more !

DVLA weren't really interested which was strange nice lady on the phone said its only going to effect you when you sell the car as the engine will state a different size. If I do want to change it then a written letter from VW is needed stating engine size, seems like a faff !

and if I hadn't taken the engine cover off id have never known !
