Leaky Pushrod

Hi all,

I've got a leak coming from my pushrods. Its probably been there a while but has got a bit worse recently.

After reading various posts on the forum - Im still none the wiser - can I just buy new seals or do I need new pushrods as well? Sorry if this is a stupid question. Just trying to work out how much more money its going to cost me.

You mean the pushrod tube? Without removing head, your only option is an adjustable pushrod tube on a 1.9DG.

Thought as much - was half hoping I could just buy a seal for a few pounds and put it in.

Yes the leak is coming from the tubes, not the rockers as far as I can tell. I'll get the wheel off to see I can see better. I think two of the tubes are leaking.

Sadly VW chose not to design the wasserboxer so you could pull out the tube from cylinder head like the earlier Aircooled engine. Barmy in my opinion, particularly as cyclinder studs can snap - hence the rather over-priced adjustable tubes.

Check before buying anything if it's on the nearside. I had an oil leak recently that turned out to be at the oil pressure switch.

Aye, on any suspected oil leak a degunk, clean and dry is always advisable.

I did give it a little clean to try and work out where it was coming from - but will take the wheel off so I can get to that particlar area better. Originally I thought it may have been coming from the top (breather tower or dipstick/filler) but I've cleaned them up and they are not the cause.

The leak is the side with the pressure switch as I can remember seeing it. I'll post a picture when I get home.

My van is 1984 so I think I've got the older version of the dynamic oil pressure system. (1 switch). I've got a problem with the oil pressure system - no oil light when ignition on but engine off - so I'm going to replace the pressure switch whilst Im there. If that doesn't help then I had better get behind the dashboard for the first time.

This is the case of one job turning into many. Oh well, all part of the fun. £4 fixes I can deal with.
