end float

Hi just need a bit of advice been doing the crankshaft il seal and when I got it out the end float shims have had it so gonna replace . I know you need three but to make certain measurement but what are best sizes to get as the price of them seem to be about a tenner each so don't want to get ones I don't even need if I can help it cheers.

You need to measure the float then choose the right ones, there should be one 0.4 shim first, it's larger diameter.
Problem you will have is you really need some shims to measure using knackered shims will give incorrect readings, so you may have to do two orders and you may end up getting one wrong. I'd start with a 0.4 and a 0.36, then measure.

Thanks for that just a quick question though someone told me that the shims shouldn't go is this true .If so should I be worried that something major is wrong.

Shims take up the play thats all. What you need is a dial guage. Some years since I've done it but relatively easy to calculate the shim you'll need based on those you have.

Its a VW design flaw. If the van has done a lot of gearchanging, is very high mileage or a long-term owner was fond of riding the clutch, they do get dished.
The only way to check it is with a dial indicator and unfortunately you do need some shims to start off, either that or an old 0-25mm mic off ebay and measure what comes out first (although that will only be an approximate guide)
