AAZ alternator wiring

I have just fitted another AAZ engine in my Syncro Doka and have used the alternator off the donor vehicle(Valeo 70 amp) instead of the original JX one I've used so far.

This alternator has the small plastic socket with (what seems) two tiny pins. I found that attaching the thin blue wire to the lower of the pins put the battery light on start up. I had the battery fail yesterday (overdue for replacement!) so fitted a new one this morning. The engine starts well but the battery light doesn't go out.

Does anybody know if I'm missing something obvious please?

Have I got the correct wire connected in the correct place? Should I also have the thin red wire connected?

Of course alternator or regulator could be defective but it seemed ok the other day.

Hi Al, yes the lower pin is the blue charge lamp wire, the upper one is the red/black tach wire. If the charge lamp pin doesn't go to ~13v with the engine running that definitely suggests an alternator fault.

This latest AAZ is a bit of a revelation. It makes me realise how rough some of the previous ones have been. Not that it will last mind you, the way I thrash them!! I drove 200 miles to see/hear it in a Golf. Much safer than buying one unseen and already removed.

I will, that's good news your new AAZ seems so healthy, the 200 miles you drove may have been well worth it.

The AAZs are a good engine...but have some weak points...I would advise doing the front pulley just to be sure..

Yes it's had a new crank bolt (I assume that's what you mean) and an oil cooler.

I'm in the process of fitting an Intercooler from a BMW 5 series. Long an narrow and fits beautifully in the void on the left between the load bed and what would be the top of the engine bay on the vans( Mine's a Doka). A home-made scoop either side should direct plenty of nice cool air to both coolers.

We'll see. I've had 5 AAZs in the last 6 or 7 years. So I'm looking for the next replacement now.But this one is by far the nicest yet.
