is there such thing as a transmission switch?

Post by Emma&Al »

My vans an automatic. I have to jiggle it around to get it to start in N. Its been suggested that the switch is worn...does anyone have the technical name for the part id need? Been trying to look online - is it just automatic transmission switch, or is that far too simple?!

The "switch" is on the gear lever in the cab.
Undo the screws holding the plastic cover on and slide it up the lever.
You should see a block of electrical contacts at the base.
Two contacts are for the reversing lights.
The remaining are for the starter circuit.
The van should start in N or P.
The "switch" is really just fixed copper contacts and a sprung bridging contact attached to the gear lever.

Spray some switch cleaner around or use some fine emery paper to clean up the copper.
It is possible to move the fixed block around a little if you find the van wont start unless you put pressure on the gear lever.
