Gearbox type

Post by vanhatter »

Hi all,

Think this has probably already been covered before but can't find it. Anyway, thinking I ought to change the gearbox oil and the Haynes says this about checking if the level is correct:

"On 4-speed 091 gearboxes the oil level should be up to the bottom edge of the plug hole. On all other gearboxes the level should be approximately 15mm below the bottom edge of the hole."

How can I tell if I've got a 091 gearbox? My van is 4 speed, does that automatically mean it's a 091 box?

It's mentioned in this post https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... +#p7862221 that the code is "stamped on case about 4" below the reverse switch housing" but I have no idea what the reverse switch housing is (and am not entirely sure this is what I'm after anyway).

Any help / advice / thoughts would be appreciated!

Cheers
Andy

you have a 091/1 gearbox just top it up till it overflows afaiac, too much oil better than too little, undo filler plug before drain plug otherwise you may not be able to refill, picture of drainplug magnet for gauge of wear
4 litres measured on a completely empty box regardless of diesel or petrol 4 or 5 speed for 2wd, 4.5 litres for syncro, you can't completely drain in the vehicle so level drain and fill to just overflowing imho
