Front disc splash guards

Post by Andyvandy »

Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far in my effort to get my Westy back on the road after 4 years.

I have removed the front hub and all that remains of the splash guard are the 3 rusty securing screws and a few tiny bits of rusty metal!
Of course the screws don't want to undo - just break up.
I will have to drill them out.

What looks to be the problem is how to cleanup/re-tap the threads once the bulk of the screw is removed.
The hub spindle is in the way of getting a tap and tap holder in to perform the operation.

Any suggestions very welcome.

Anyone know what size thread the screws are ?

Thanks

I got one of mine out cleanly with punch and hammer working on the head, drilled one, and abandoned the last after getting its head off. Tapped the one I drilled a quarter turn at a time, taking the t bar off the tap each quarter turn. Took a while... And the size? M6. Drilling out was a bit of a b. of a job to do, and while I was pretty dissatisfied with my skills, the resultant tapped hole held the bolt securely enough. Couldn't muster the enthusiasm or time to drill out the last bolt tho, just left the splash plate with two bolts holding it. And I've not the right hand splash plate yet...

Good luck

Roger,

Thanks so much!

I have just drilled off the heads.
Tomorrow I will pop into town and get a few drill bits and taps!
