Tappet noise

Post by TONYT25T25 »

I have an intermittent tappet noise, It sound as if it is the rear N/S tappet which occasionally is quite noisy but goes away after a couple of miles. Would an engine flush and engine oil renewal sort it out, if so what engine oil flush is recommended and any other tips would be appreciated. I have a 1.9 1984 petrol water cooled camper. Rgds Tony

Yes change the oil and filter first, give it a good long run with some high revs.
1540 mineral is the correct oil and ideally you chage it twice a year.
It's common on these engines especially after high mileage.

I don't like flushes myself.

This crops up constantly on here. Search noisy tappets on the search and you find loads of previous messages. Check it out.
This does happen quite a lot. Even the Haynes manual covers the issue.

Tks, hopefully an oil change will solve the issue.

Oil should be changed twice a year anyway.
Coolant every two
Brake fluid the same.

Oil twice a year? This isnt 1950!
6000 miles or every two years is quite frequent enough.

Oh no it isn't.
Every 6k or 6 months.
Filter every 12.

Up to you really, with oil at £11.50 a gallon it gets done here

 At that price it can't be up to much, no wonder you have to change it so often!

Morris oils
Golden film 20w/50
So no it's not up to much, it's probably up to the best of them.

Tks for all replies, got the oil, oil filter and new plug from GSF for £20 so quite happy with frequency of changing it more often. Nearly got caught out with the new plug which was larger than the existing one (the head not the thread), the plug recess nearly caught me out as a spanner was not up to the job, but fortunately due to the smaller existing plug I managed to get a socket on it, so just renewed the washer and all appears ok..

Everybody should own a low range torque wrench for sump plugs or expect it to strip out one day or rattle out and loose you oil ( both have happened to me)
It's not so hard to drill and helicoil but you need the right tools and preferably some experience.

just sayin :D
