Loss of power + Backfire + Juddering Camper

Post by cubensis »

Hello all, just been from Manchester to Hay-on-wye, 300 mile round trip. After about 100 miles of the van driving fine it started to lose power and kind of pull back. Sometimes it would stall sometimes it would backfire and in general it smelt like it was running rich.

We called the once we were at our campsite and he couldn't replicate the problem. He said the vacuum hoses where fine as where the ht leads / sparks, also the fuel was flowing through the filter fine. He said all he could think of was the ignition coil but without seeing the problem it was hard to say. Anyway he said if it happens again check the coil, if it's hot it's probably the problem.

So we left and 4 miles down the road it began happening again. Checked the coil - warm, but not hot, seemed fine. after about 7 miles we decided to fuel up, fueled up, drove of and the problem has gone, we drove 130 miles problem free.

so my question is; has anyone ever filled up and had this problem? And if so is it just a random dodgy fuel? Or is it more likely to be a blocked carb or something?

Any other ideas would be great, things to check for etc. We have a 1.9 DG Petrol 1986 T25, I didn''t fill it with diesel previously or anything like that.

Thanks!

It sounds similar to a problem I had recently. In the end a compression test revealed three cylinders failed. Not sure if it is valves, or rings. Hopefully your problem will not be so bad!

Hiya, yes it was Morrison's! Is it well known for it or something?

Hopefully not a cylinder problem, would a compression test show this fault?

Thanks for your replies!

Ive had a few issues with Morrisons fuel. If I used it in my Aircooled it ran like and sounded like a bag of pooh and last week while in Scotland I filled up with diesel at Morrisons in Fort William and the van ran poorly, even after an injector problem was fixed, until I refilled at Kyle, after that ran fine.

Ah I see, thanks for the tip. Seeing as you guessed Morrison's it seems pretty likely it may just have been the petrol, here's hoping, thanks again.

Change the fuel filter by the tank.
