Drive Shaft

Hi,

Driving up a steep hill on a fine bank holiday trip in Wales. Change gear - slight bang and no forward drive!

Looks like drive shaft has come away from coupling. See picture below. It's currently on a garage forecourt as I don't have the tools required etc.

What do you expect the price to be, and also could there be other damage / reasons.... any advice?

It looks like its just come away.

Have the bolts sheared or just come out? It's not unusual for bolts to work lose and come out and dissapere. (just zoomed in, they look like allen bolts and are still there)

should'nt be expensive if nothing is broken. Brickworks do the bolts if needed and an allen key or star bit. Stuff it full of grease (MC1500 is what I have)

You can get home on less bolts if needed. (take a few from other shaft if desperate)

make sure allen key is fully located in socket and tighten it up FT. if not fully located, head will get chewed and a sod to get them out again.

short allen key socket and ratchet is best way

I have read it's not advisable to drive on less that the 6 bolts, there is just too much torque.
They should be tightened to 45Nm, nothing more, nothing less and bolts must have the safety washers fitted.

common occurance it seems, possibly because somebody didn't use a torque wrench before.

Snapped off bit will often just unscrew.

Definitely not the preferred option but it is possible just to get you out of a jam - drive accordingly and fit the rest at the first opportunity.

As above ^^^. I drove home ~80 miles (a few years ago now) with just three in there. I drove like a pussy of course and stopped a few times to check they were still tight as I only had a standard Allen key. It was of course dark and raining when it happened. It always is isn't it :twisted: :twisted:

How you getting on. Any news?

Ended up just getting a tow truck involved 3 tow trucks to make it home - didn't have the tools required to do the job.

Have asked a garage to take a look....will keep you updated on the cost. Pleased to hear what I expected that its just general wear and tear and hopefully shouldnt have affected any other areas, interesting about using less bolts etc, I was quite compfy managed to roll back into a field where we had a BBQ while waiting for the tow truck
