Can bearing carrier be shot blasted?

Post by Jonnyb416 »

I am about to take my trailing arm to be shot blasted and wondered if the bearing carrier can be shot blasted too? The only concern I have had is the inside of it looks really smooth and don't want it to be damaged maybe. Any help or thoughts appreciated. Cheers, Jon.

The shot blasting will destroy the tolerance of that bearing surface. We didnt do our rear hubs, but we got our front steering knuckles cleaned up by a local powdercoater who used a less aggressive abrasive medium that didn't damage the bearing surface finish.

Thanks. I did think that. When doing the other side my mate put the carrier in the parts wash for a few days so I reckon il just do that again. Cheers for your help.

Yes machined surfaces should not be abraded.

Leave bearings/seals in when blasted. Get a competent blaster to do them.Mine used recycled glass IIRC.

Have had rears done before. Sit them face up so backs aren't touched and get him to stop shy of the seals on top (what would be outers). Turned out bob on.

Just need to make sure your blast chap is switched on and doesn't treat it like an I beam :ok

I've used deox-c on stuff and it's great. Mix it with water, put your bits in and in a few days all the rust has gone. Doesn't touch the non rusty metal

Just another one related to this, can steel wheels be shot blasted?

I'm thinking I may get mine done and fresh paint applied. Should look nice :)

Yes. They can be blasted, although not heavily.

Thanks. I will see what the bloke says. It looked rather brutal. He was wearing a sort of spaceman suit!
