Cheers Chris, I now have no doubt of that. I'm glad I asked my question in such a way that it's brought up something that looks likely to help others. Vive le forum!

Well, having been out to work out just what kind of tricks I will have to pull to get through the emissions test, I have started to question the type of carburetor and therefore pull-down I really have. While I try to remind myself how best to link or display photos on this forum, I'll just say that the pull-down sits at the rear of the carb (i.e. towards the front of the van) and it surprised me in two ways:
1) It has a much shorter plunger/actuating rod than the part I just got from Brickwerks
2) I apply a vacuum to it and the diaphragm seems to hold the vacuum, though the travel of the actuating rod is quite limited
The pull-down is mounted on the carb at an angle and feels very solid (as if that's the only way you could mount it) and therefore I can't see how I would fit the new one if it turns out that the old one is not functioning correctly. There would simply never be enough clearance above the inlet manifold.
I'm getting back to grips with my Photobucket account but meanwhile, does any of this sound familiar and, I can't believe I'm asking this, are there different models of Pierburg 2E3??
Thanks all
Chris

From your description it sounds like you're describing what my Haynes Big Book of Carbs calls the 'Secondary Throttle Diaphragm'. Don't you have a similar looking unit 90 degrees round from that (clockwise)? The hose from it is at the front of the carb (back of the van), and the arm sits under the top lip of the carb between the carb body and the choke on the right hand side.

Yes Chris, like that but a lot dirtier. Thanks for posting that photo - tomorrow I'll have to take another look to work out just where the actuator rod sits. I understand what you've said - it's just as intricate as I feared really...
Many thanks
