WBX performance camshafts

Post by silverbullet »

Lets have a sensible conversation...I've been looking around for a while, then came across an old topic (2007) on Shop Talk where "pocketrocket" who I think is called Rocky, had developed a good torquey grind for the 025 engine in the US. Anyone know if he's still making them?

I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel, so if there's a cam that genuinely suits the watercooled engine when fitted into a 1500kg+ brick like ours then I'm very interested.

Standard camshaft supply seems to be drying up at a rate of knots and it seems a bit silly to go searching for what is actually a profile developed in the late 1970's. Aircooled big-banger performance stuff is a minefield and what with the oil pump gear differences and most of them going into race bugs or Baja sand racers, seem to be completely inappropriate for our needs.

In a word, if there's a hydraulic cam out there that will allow a 2.1 to pull from 1500 and run out of breath at 5500 with a solid torque curve, respectable idle manners and modest thirst, then that's what I want for the next build.

If it needs a change in rocker ratio, that's fine. I really like the Speedshop exhaust, it works well and is available over here so I'd use that every time too. Injection or carbs? I want to go sequential on the next one with MegaSquirt, probably with throttle bodies too. If that works then I'll apply the same approach to the s/c engine which I really want to get moving, it's been an age since I looked in the box of parts!

I'm sure you have probably read these but just in case take a look at threads below.

http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=134116

Tencent and a few of the other US builders use the CB2280 but check out the comments on matching the oil pump.

Marco Mansi has used a Scat C25 in a couple of his engines but I have seen him post anything on the results.

Well there's two threads that I haven't tripped over, but I forgot my shoptalk password...

I have had a chat with a UK cam manufacturer about making chill-cast iron cams (better than OEM) to a profile suitable for heavy vans i.e. a mildly warmed version of the 2.1 profile but with the dished end suitable for the wbx oil pump; not a type 4 cam.

I'll save you the boring details: I don't have a spare 12k to invest in the tiny niche "quality" wbx market.

It looks like the CB2280 is the one to use. Torque is what's required, along with not upsetting the Digi systems. It's just the damn oil pump problem...it's at times like this I wish that I did have a bit of an Aircooled background!

I've been scratching around all over the place and so far, no joy in the UK. Where can I get the CB2280 with the post-71 "4-bolt" flange, so that the bigger late oil pump can be used?

@Silverbullet,
hi, is there any news about this?

I saw VW-Heritage is selling the CB cam shaft but they notes some hi-revvs items has to be used. Is it right or I can use my stock VW MV engine bits? (Followers, valves, push rods...).

thanks!
