Holds worth pop top roof removal

Post by orangebooboobearcrew »

Hi,
The on going repairs to our 1980 2.0 cu air cooled continues and I am now preparing to have a go at the leaking roof and window surrounds.
I've scoured the forum and the internet and can't seem to find any examples of how to remove one of these roofs.
Has anyone done one and if so knows what order to do this in?
Do the struts need to come off first?
Is the roof simply bonded on?
How difficult is it to do? I am an amateur with medium skills and doing it largely on my own so is it feasible?
Thanks in advance gang ;)
Chris

I had the same the same roof on my first van, Giant Riser, never took it off but can imagine its heavy. I had to take the struts off because the springs had worn so it kept collapsing, solved this by packing them out with dowling.
I think there is a company in upton on severn who might be able to give better advice, they do the same roof for bays.

ps don't lose the lugs in the struts!

Hi thanks this. I've had a look at that website before and there does seem to be a great array of parts. However what I really need to know is how to take the roof completely off...
I might email them and see whether they have any experience of this; if not I'll just have a go and see what happens

Hi,

Sorry to resurrect this one but I have had no response from the camper roof people and still have no idea how to remove this...

I had a dig about at the roof last week and there seems to be 2 small screws either side at the front holding it on through the guttering - these were covered in filler to hide them.

The rest I can't see any obvious fittings so presume these are again hidden under filler or it is simply bonded on?

In terms of removal - would I pop the centre cap up first then try and undo the gas struts so I can remove the canopy then that section of the roof?

Sorry guys I wouldn't ask for help if I wasn't completely stumped...

Thanks,

Chris

Does the roof come off in two pieces ie bellows section and then main bit attatched to van. Iirc i thin mine was bonded but never took it off so cant confirm this, i never saw any brackets holding it onto the roof. I think mine just sat in the gutters
