Cutting out

Post by tarqs101 »

Right, need help...again! Started Betsy on Saturday and she didn't sound right, chuggy/popping. Checked oil and it was low so put more in. Checked and level looked ok. Drove about 2 miles to a friends no problem. Few hours later started her up, noticed the petrol was low heading towards red but not quite in it. Drove to the garage. Whilst waiting for a pump she seemed juddery when revs were low, got home and checked oil but it was now over the Max. This morning I did an oil change, topped up a little at a time until just below Max. Went out and now it keeps cutting out. Even when traveling at speed, if I knock it out of gear the dash lights up and it's gone. Got home and it looks like the oil level is over Max again!! Could this be why it's cutting out? Argh!

Sorry,

It's a 2.0l 1982 Aircooled.

Last service was by the previous owner. We bought her in October. Has run ok all winter, this is the first problem we've had. Also need to mention, she normally runs really smoothly but today didn't feel like she had much power. A little jumpy while driving. But she cut out at EVERY junction and like I said even when travelling at 40MPH if I pushed clutch down she died.

Park on level surface, slight camber, but nothing major.

Dont think its oil causing the problem. Sounds like a fuel or ignition issue to me.

Could it be the fuel pump? Somebody has mentioned the return valve inside the pump? Just took the oil filler cap off to have a smell and can smell fuel...

Know nothing about Aircooled but I think fuel pump is mechanical lift type like dg. In my mind if you have fuel in the oil, the diaphragm in the pump is letting fuel pass so get a new one (and you will probably need to change the oil again).

Thanks for your help.

At least I've had a practise at changing the oil!
