I turn the key there is a clunk from what sounds like the solenoid but engine does not turn. After a few tries engine turns and starts. Normally no problem and starter turns engine easily. All electrical connections are good. Happened once 8 months ago once and engine started when I turned key a couple of minutes later. It has suddenly become persistent, yet it starting happily this morning after standing for 5 months.
Other sites blame starter motor or solenoid or the bush. Everyone agrees I should always change bush.
Do I just need to replace the bush?
1983 engine water cooled 1900 cc.

Its likely (if connections at battery and at starter motor are good) to be bushes inside starter - ie wearing out. As they do, commutator gets dirty, sometimes brushes contact (and it spins) and other times they don't (particularly if brushes are on their last legs) and nothing happens. Its possible to fit new ones yourself thereby saving £100+ and spending about £7 instead but you'll need a gas-powered soldering iron to get enough heat to solder on the new ones. Lots on Youtube regarding soldering brushes on starter motors.
Heres the end removed from mine. In my case it was the braided cable. That too can cause intermittent probs but my suggestion is pop the end cap off and take a look - the problem should be evident.

The bush you refer to can cause starter to bind, but shouldn't stop it trying to spin. If you do above, fit a new bush anyway - they cost pennies but can take an age to do due to old one being stubborn to get out.
I'm doing a brush change video in a few weeks.

Thanks. I think I will just replace the whole assembly. Apparently the bush can be persuaded out using an expandable Rawl plug. Is there another trick as access is a problem?

Replace whole starter motor? Rather you than me. Way too many starters get changed for what is often a small problem and they're over-priced as it is. Bush: rawlbolt best bet.

Post script - had local garage put new Bosch starter in and it has worked perfectly for a year. GSF refunded me for a faulty refurbished starter that one practically shorted out the battery.
