Radius Rod Bushes

Post by TONYT25T25 »

Whilst prepping for my upcoming MOT I notice that both outer Radius rod bushes are worn/pitted, first question is is this a possible MOT failure, Intend to change anyway and have looked at the WIKI and archive but looking for more advice, is it possible to only change the outer bushes.. The nut looks as if it hasnt moved for a while so will soak with wd40 or similar, any other advice welcomed as do not want to touch the inner due to camber etc. Rgds Tony

Plusgas for starters. Despite the myth, WD40 is not up to the job of freeing rusted nuts/bolts. Its for dispelling water.

Do use the search function for 'radius rod' though. Theres a lot including:

Hello Steve, thanks for this, like the idea of the jack, gives it a bit of control as well as strength, have to remember that for this and other jobs. Is it possible to just remove the outer bush if u can get the nut loose, as the inners look ok. Regards Tony

If the outer needs doing the inner will also. Count the number of turns and measure position first and write down the measurements and store safely then write down again and store somewhere else safe also.

Tks will probably find out when i get the bolt off, tks to all, do not want to drag this out, but if I get the outer bolt out is it easy to replace the outer bush only or does the rod retract??.

Tony,
The trolley jack was a life saver and the extra welly it gave me was very welcome!!

As for just removing the outer bush, as said previously, they possible will both be US. I had to cut my nut off as it was well and truly stuck. Be careful if you need to deploy the angle grinder and try to avoid the end of the radius rod.

Good luck

Tks Steve, I was thinking about the angle grinder, have not tried to unscrew it yet as I will have to purchase another socket as the ones I have are not the right size, Rgds Tony

Further to my last, can anybody recommend a good hand held blow torch that provides a narrow flame for targetting seized bolts etc, I used a standard one earlier to heat up the nut on my hand brake cable that had seized up, did the trick but the flame was wider than I required, no bangs so all ok. I did this job a few weeks ago and used the jack to compress the suspension, whilst using a heavy duty ratchet strap to pull the radius rod back into position. Without it I would have never been able to get the outer nut back on as I couldn't even see the threaded rod through the rubber bushes.

Worked a treat. :ok

I pinched the idea from a posting a while ago.

Tks to both, I like the strap idea and can see how it works, I will use it for my job as well as others. Rgds Tony
