water pump

Post by dazman1 »

Evening all
I have a couple of questions that I hope you can help me with.Yesterday started van to make short trip and got light flashing on temp gauge, drove about half a mile in total.
checked van when i got back and found i had lost all coolant( with help from posts on here found out it looks like water pump.)
Now to my two question.
1 do you think i could have done any serious damage to the engine with the short trip, temp gauge didn't even get a quarter of the way up.
2 how easy is to change the pump for someone like me who has trouble finding which end of a spanner is which.
My van is 1989 with a 1.6td jx engine
thanks in advance.

It depends how long you have been driving around pumping the coolant out. Water pumps rarely let go catastrophically, it will have been losing coolant for a while.

Are you going to replace the complete pump or just the front [the part with the impeller in it]?

Well you have to remove the alternator and its cradle, then the pipes going to and from the pump...youll have a better idea when you have the new pump in your hands!
